The Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation will have a busy schedule in the first four months of 2009, as the club aims to get more people involved in the sport and promote fitness.

NMITF president Russ Quinn said they will kick off the 2009 season with the first Enticer Triathlon next month. The Enticer is set for Feb. 8 and will begin at 7am at the Pau Pau Beach Pavilion. The event will feature a 500-meter swim, a bike leg from Pau Pau to Banzai and back, and a 1.5-mile run.

“It will not take an individual more than an hour to complete the course. Teams are welcome,” Quinn said.

Registration fee for the Enticer is $10 for NMITF members and $15 for non-members.

Other events NMITF scheduled for the first quarter of the year are the Leap Frog Race, Enticer Triathlon 2 and OREXTERRA.

The Leap Frog Race, which is a unique event, as a team shares one bicycle and individuals alternate between running and biking, is set for Feb. 15.

The second Enticer on March 1 is still scheduled at Pau Pau Beach, but will have a longer course, while OREXTERRA will be held on March 15 as a warm up for the 2009 XTERRA Saipan Championships.

“This is an off-road triathlon that has a unique start. The swim is first, and optional. Once all swimmers are done and ready for the mountain bike portion of the race, a mass start of riders takes place. The race finishes after a scenic trail run,” Quinn said.

Before the two events in March, Quinn is encouraging NMITF members to participate in the 2009 Jazy Cup Tour De Marianas Bike Race, which will be held on Saipan on Feb. 21 and 22.

“Besides these events there are several fun activities that are sprinkled in between, such as orienteering courses (learning how to use a compass and map while trying to find check points), duathlons (run, bike, run Races), night time rides (needs lights), ladies rides, movie nights, hiking, and training clinics,” the NMITF president said.
