Mt. Carmel School broke loose in the third quarter to beat host Saipan Community School, 42-35, last Friday in the girls division of the 2009 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association basketball league.

Playmaker Kaylani Lebria shot 14 of her 22 points in the last two quarters to lead the Knights to their first win of the season.

They lost their first game when they hosted the visiting Grace Christian Academy Eagles in the league’s opening day of competitions on Jan. 22.

The Knights nearly blew a 10-2 first quarter lead as the Tsunamis outscored them 15-6 in the second and took the upper hand at halftime, 17-16.

Alina Yoon made two free throws with barely seven seconds gone by in the third quarter to increase the Tsunamis’ gap, 19-16, but the Knights quickly retaliated with a 12-2 blast, 10 of them came from Lebria.

The two teams traded shots after that with Jazmine Che draining in long jumpers three times for the Knights and Alina Yoon also had three from the keyhole for the Tsunamis for a 34-27 count in favor of the Knights.

Victoria Reyes scored six in an 8-4 burst in the fourth quarter by the Tsunamis, who cut the lead by just three points, 35-38. But Lebria proved unstoppable for the Knights as she fired six of her teams’ total eight points in the final quarter.

Also helping Lebria in the Knights offense were Che with six points, Chelsea Bortolo, and Carey Demapan had four each and Amy Taylor added two.

Reyes led the Tsunamis again with 16 points but her team failed to duplicate their 38-16 victory over Seventh Day Adventist on Jan. 29, and the Tsunamis are now 1-2.

Xuan Jun Lu added 10 points for the Tsunamis, while Yoon came up with five and Han Mil Oh and Lydin Johnson finished with two each.

Also on Thursday, SCS Boys won over the visiting SDA, 44-14, with Justin Poon scoring more than half of his team’s total score as he finished with 24 markers.

James Ko added 12, Christian Tudela made six, and Eron Constante had four.

Tyler Palacios led SDA with nine, while Vincent Iba and Aamir Shakir scored three and two points, respectively for SDA.
