Kagman High School reasserted its supremacy over Mt. Carmel School in the girls varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League after an emphatic 58-26 victory Wednesday night at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The Lady Ayuyus topped the Lady Knights in their first meeting, 52-42, during the opening of the league last month.

In that game, Kagman secured the win only in the last minute of the match when MCS collapsed against the former’s pressure defense.

In their second outing, the Lady Ayuyus had the game in the bag as early as in the first quarter, which ended with Kagman in front, 16-2.

The Lady Knights made only a field goal in the first period courtesy of Noelle Calvo, who was forced to carry the load for MCS, as top scorer Nicole Lebria was injured.

Lebria, who scored 24 points in their first meeting with the Lady Ayuyus, was nursing a left knee injury, which she sustained a week ago.

The Lady Knights picked up the scoring in the second period, but still it was only Calvo who nailed field goals in that canto. Calvo made two baskets and went 2-for-5 from the foul line, while her two teammates added a charity apiece finally putting MCS’ production in double figures [10] against Kagman’s 30 markers.

In the third period, Kagman held the Lady Knights to only two points in the first 7:30 of the frame before a Hail Mary shot from Justalyn Camacho went in giving MCS its fourth point of the quarter.

Calvo scored Mt. Carmel’s other basket, but she spent the remaining five minutes of the third period on the bench due to a minor injury. Calvo was barreling her way to the paint when she collided with Kagman defenders and fell hard on the ball. It took a while before she picked herself up and when she did, she limped a bit heading to the bench.

With their second best scorer also gone, things turned from bad to worse for the Lady Knights in the third period.

Calvo returned a few minutes after the fourth quarter started and added seven more points despite still playing hurt.

Lebria also decided to play in the fourth quarter, hoping to start a major comeback for the Lady Knights. She made her first two outside shots, but muffed the next six, including three 3-point attempts, as her legs were simply not there to give good form to her outside shots.

The loss dropped the Lady Knights to a 1-3 slate, having recorded their lone win in the league against Southern last week.

The Lady Ayuyus improved to a 4-1 record, losing only to the MHS Dolphins.
