Team The Set/Natara was crowned new champion in the 7th Annual Crime Stoppers Softball Tournament after outsmarting Team Becks/No Zone in the finals, 6-3, yesterday at the Capital Hill Ballfield.

It was a repeat of The Set’s win earlier in the day over the same team when they met for the first time in the semifinals of the winners’ bracket, 8-7.

The Set, sponsored by Mark and Rose Pangelinan and Bank of Saipan, was undefeated in the three-day event. The eventual champion topped Delta Management on Friday night, 12-7, and Team 360 on Saturday, 8-5, to take its first title in its first time to join the tournament.

After losing in the winners’ bracket semis, Team Becks came back with a big win against three-time defending champion Wells Fargo, 3-2, to advance to the finals.

The win was Team Becks’ second victory against Wells Fargo.

Wells Fargo opened its title defense bid with a victory over Pacific Islands Club Friday night, 16-4, before Team Becks pulled off a 6-4 win over the dethroned champion Saturday night.

Wells Fargo then quickly recovered in the losers’ bracket, eliminating IT&E in their second meeting and the ousted defending champion was as on its way for a crack at another title after winning over Team 360 and DFS.

In their rematch, Team Becks caught Wells Fargo flatfooted early on with John Reyes, Jess Iguel, and Ben Taisacan scoring three runs for the former at the top of the first. Wells Fargo never recovered from thereon.

Ben Tagabuel and Roy Celis reached home plate at the bottom fourth, but that was the best Wells Fargo could muster into the game.

Nine teams joined this year’s event with Shell Marianas completing the list.

Individual sponsors were Mark Palacios, Joey Dela Cruz, Liz Palacios, Jerry Ayuyu, Derron Flores, Larry Olomchel, Vinnie Sablan, and the CNMI Crime Stoppers Board of Directors led by president Jim Arenovski, Robert Woodruff, and James Matsumoto.

Department of Public Safety Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela opened the tournament with a ceremonial pitch Friday night before the first game between Wells Fargo and PIC.
