JP remembered in Saturday walkathon
Nearly 600 individuals walked all the way from Garapan to Susupe last Feb. 7, to honor the memory of former Tan Holdings Corp. executive JP Pangelinan and to help raise funds for the Marianas Cancer Society.
A total of 599 walkers got up at the crack of dawn Saturday to make the trek, dubbed “A Walk to Remember,” starting from the newly renamed JP Center (formerly the CIC Centre) in Garapan, all the way to the spruced up Susupe Beach Park. There were 264 Tan Holdings employees who participated, while 335 were non-employees.
Participants began the walk as early as 6am, with most arriving at the Susupe Beach Park a little over an hour later. Upon arriving, the walkers were offered sandwiches and fruits and treated to an outdoor performance by Floyd Lim of the Big Beats and Joel Tagalicud of the Fat Joy Slim Band.
Organizers of the walkathon said it will become an annual event and will be held around the same week as the death anniversary of JP Pangelinan. This year is considered significant because it is the first death anniversary of the former Saipan Tribune publisher, who died Feb. 5 last year.
Organizers acknowledged the help of the Department of Public Safety, whose officers ensured the safety of the walkers; the Big Boyz Marine, which lent their service vehicle for the return trip of the walkers; and to all the participants. (Saipan Tribune)
