Donations continue to pour in for the two minor sons of a contract worker who passed away on Feb. 2 after battling a serious medical condition.

Geraldine Amor, who sought the community’s help for her trip home, died two days after arriving in the Philippines from Saipan.

She left behind two sons: a 1-year-old and a three-year-old now in the care of her aunt, Remy Amor, on Saipan.

Her last employer of record eventually paid for her airfare and that of her medical escorts, costing about $8,500.

The donations collected by her relatives and civic groups led by the Overseas Filipino Workers Support Group and the Marianas Association of Filipino Architects and Engineers helped in the funeral expenses at home and her two sons.

Lito Marquez, chairman of the OFW Support Group’s welfare services, said they were able to raise $4,231 from individuals and groups here and abroad as of Saturday. But donations continue to pour in even though the collections have already stopped.

“This just shows that people do help others in times of need. We are thankful,” Marquez said.

On Sunday, for example, they collected an additional $388. The Marianas Institute of Filipino CPAs led by president Melvin Malvar, Irene Santiago and Jhun Banadera personally handed a $250 check to Remy Amor. The remaining amount came from individuals.

Of the funds raised, $ 2,600 had been sent to the Philippines, while the remaining amount will be used to temporarily assist the deceased’s children.

Geraldine Amor had been ill for months until she was confined in the intensive care unit of the Commonwealth Health Center on Jan. 19. She was diagnosed with lupus, an auto-immune disease that can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys, and brain.

Because of her medical condition, her contract was not renewed on Dec. 10 when it expired, forcing her to seek the community’s help for her to return home. Geraldine Amor worked on Saipan for five years.

Her relatives and friends on Saipan and the Philippines, along with the OFW Support Group and MAFEA, expressed thanks to all those who donated to Amor’s cause.
