The USS Hampton arrived on Saipan last Tuesday for its first call on Saipan. The U.S. Navy submarine was welcomed upon its arrival by a contingent that included the Inatuas Cultural Dancers and Marianas Visitors Authority.

“We welcome the captain and crew of the USS Hampton and hope they enjoy their visit to the Northern Mariana Islands,” said MVA managing director Perry Tenorio. “I would like the servicemen of the Hampton to know that we appreciate your service on behalf of our country, and we wish you a restful and refreshing time in our islands.”

MVA joined officials of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s Armed Services Committee, Commonwealth Ports Authority Seaport, and Office of Military and Veterans Affairs in welcoming the vessel. The USS Hampton is scheduled to be on Saipan until March 23, 2009. With a homeport of San Diego, California, the vessel can accommodate up to 12 officers and 98 crew.

The USS Hampton is one of 45 Los Angeles-class submarines providing the backbone of the submarine force. As an attack submarine, the vessel is designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships; project power ashore with Tomohawk cruise missiles and special operation forces; carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions and support missions; support carrier strike groups; and engage in mine warfare.
