Commonwealth Utilities Corporation outscored Mayor’s Office, 21-8, Thursday night at the Capital Hill Ballfield to keep its hopes alive for at least a tiebreak for the last playoff berth in the 2009 Budweiser Inter Government/Business Softball League.

CUC stretched a 14-7 advantage after five full innings by firing seven more runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Pitcher Melvin Tudela went 4-for-4 with four runs, two RBIs and a double, while other CUC batters contributed well.

Ton Guerrero was only 1-for-4 at bat, but it was a two-run homerun. Joe Fejeran had three runs, two RBIs, and a triple; Vinnie Sablan scored two runs, three RBIs, two doubles, and a triple; Pat Blas made two runs and two RBIs, Jeff Cabrera nailed three runs, two triples, and a RBI; Oscar Sablan tallied two runs, two doubles, and three RBIs; Glen Villagomez posted one run, one double, and a RBI; Johnny Isaac recorded one run, one double, and three RBIs; and Ben Sablan fired one run and a double.

However, with its 7-10 win-loss record for 11th place in the team standings, CUC must win its last game in the regular season for a chance to make it to the 10-team field playoff round, which will start before the end of this month.

Eight teams had already assured themselves of playoff seats, leaving only two slots to complete the cast.

POI Aviation is occupying the ninth position with its 9-8 card, needing to win at least one of its last two games to make it to the next round.

P&S is in 10th with an 8-8 slate and is two wins away from clinching a playoffs seat.

CUC needs to win against No Zone and hope that POI and P&S would drop their remaining assignments to force a tiebreak for the last playoffs ticket.

In the other scheduled game on Thursday night, the Beach Boys won via forfeiture againts Customs.

Customs is now out of the playoffs, joining Mayor’s Office for an early vacation.
