Youth bowler Raphael Zapanta extended his winning ways in the Fiji Water Prince/Princess of the Lanes tournament after topping the March roll-off Sunday at the Saipan Bowling Center.

Zapanta tallied 776 pinfalls to beat six other youth bowlers and secured his third straight monthly title. He started last weekend’s roll-off with 208 pinfalls in Game 1, slowed down a bit in Games 2 and 3 with 196 and 151 pinfalls before finishing strong with 221 pinfalls.

The Saipan Southern High School student won by 195 pinfalls against runner-up Leeanne Yarobwemal, who totaled 581 pinfalls in four games. Yarobwemal showed her toughest form in Game 4, scoring 174 pinfalls. Her other scores were 132 in Game 1, 117 in Game 2, and 158 in Game 3.

Completing the Top 3 was February roll-off runnerup Marion McKenzie, who earned a total of 579 pinfalls. He started strong with 192 pinfalls in Game 1, but failed to sustain his momentum in the next three games (119, 134, 134).

The four other participants in the March roll-off were Nikko Gutierrez (547), Troy Verdaguer (480), Marcel McKenzie (398), and Toby Verdaguer (303).

In the Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tournament, Raymond Zapanta and Diane Chong led after the first roll-off, also on Sunday.

Raymond recorded 829 pinfalls after knocking more than 200 pins in the last two games. He had 170 and 183 pinfalls in Games 1 and 2 and was good only for the No. 3 spot, but grabbed the lead with his 219 and 257 pinfalls in Game 3 and 4.

Dannie Robles dropped to second with 761 pinfalls, followed by Kitz Barja (750), Alex Castro (714), Raymond Angeles (681), Percy Omechelang (634), and Tony Yarobwemal (470).

Chong registered 726 pinfalls in the first roll-off for a 14-pinfall lead over Emi Williams, who nailed 712 pinfalls. In third place was Yho Villavicenco (636), followed by Gigi Zapanta (627), Linda Yarobwemal (589), and Gloria Omechelang (587).

The second roll-off was held last night, but results were unavailable at press time. If Raymond and Chong’s scores are unbeaten, they get to keep the March King and Queen of the Lanes title.

Participants in the King and Queen monthly roll-offs can bowl twice, but only the highest score is counted.
