Garapan downs RM System
Garapan bounced back from a loss against Phil Pan via an 86-79 victory over RM System in the Masters division of the 2009 Navy Hill Friendship Basketball League Saturday night at the Garapan Basketball Court.
New recruits William Opone and James Abuy proved to be good additions to Garapan, as the duo combined for about half of the team’s total points. Opone finished with 21 points, while Abuy tallied 19.
Garapan, which bowed to Phil Pan on March 30, 81-74, also drew double figures from two more players with Ferdie De La Torre also nailing 19 and Adonis Macoto chipping in 10.
Garapan was in control of the game since the opening buzzer. Macoto, Opone, and another new recruit, Melvin Villarin, teamed up in Garapan’s good start to give the home team a 21-14 lead.
Dela Torre and Jun Galzote, who were scoreless in the first period, found their mark in the second canto, making seven and six points, respectively, to increase Garapan’s lead to 10 at halftime, 41-30.
RM System outscored Garapan for the first time in the third period, 21-14, to move within four, 51-55. RM System cut the lead to single digits, as no Garapan player canned more than two fieldgoals in that canto.
But it seemed Garapan just rested for awhile, as it buckled down to work in the fourth period with De La Torre leading the attack. De La Torre fired 10 points, Opone contributed nine, and Abuy chipped in six.
With the trio making things happen for Garapan anew in the fourth canto, RM System faltered in its bid to pull off a come-from-behind win.
Alex Ocampo led RM System’s losing cause, scoring 18 points. Gilbert Espinosa added 16, while Danny Illahi and Warren Villegas tallied 14 apiece.
