[B]Meeting for Palauans on Saipan[/B]

The Palau Community Association is calling a meeting of all Palauans on Saipan this Saturday, April 11, 2009. The meeting will be held at BAI SITE (Navy Hill), 10am. [B]Free maritime hazmat transportation training seminar[/B]

The U.S. Coast Guard is hosting a free half-day seminar on maritime hazardous materials transportation. If you are in the business of handling containerized shipment of hazardous goods, then this training is for you. Topics include how to use the Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Part 1185), labeling and placarding requirements, properly filling out shipping papers, and what to expect during Coast Guard’s container inspections. The free training will be held April 13, 2009, 8am-12pm, at the American Memorial Park Auditorium. For more information, contact Lt. Julie Bethke at 236-2969. (USCG)

[B]Memorial Day preparations begin[/B]

May 25, 2009 is Memorial Day, during which the CNMI will pay tribute to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have passed away. The community will remember those who served the nation so that everyone may enjoy the fruits of freedom of a democratic society. This is to let all Memorial Day Committee members and all interested in being a part of the committee that we will begin to meet every Tuesday at 9am starting on April 14, 2009, at the Office of Military/ Veterans Affairs on Capitol Hill building 1364. SANTA RITA, Guam—A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, April 9, to initiate renovations and new construction of Charles King Gym on U.S. Naval Base Guam.

The $33 million project, which was awarded to Guam-based DCK Pacific, will transform the current gymnasium and fitness center into a state-of-the-art facility; and incorporate energy efficient and environmentally-conscious design concepts to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) Silver certification.

The new Charles King Gym, slated for completion in January 2011, will support mission readiness of Joint Region Marianas, while enhancing quality of life for Military active-duty personnel, family members, reservists and retirees. (PR)

[B]BoG to name winners of TV ad contest[/B]

HAGATNA, Guam—The Bank of Guam will be announcing next week the winners of its first TV commercial contest. Prizes will be awarded during a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2009 AT 4pm at the Bank of Guam’s Headquarters Conference Room on the 10th Floor of the Hagatna building.

The contest produced 46 entries produced by students in Guam and the CNMI. The competition was held from Jan. 19 through March 31, and was open to high school and college and university students throughout Guam, the CNMI and neighboring islands. Cash prizes are $2,000 for first prize, $1,000 for Second Prize, and $500 for Third Prize. A Bonus category has also been awarded at the $500 level. Three Honorable Mention recognitions will be made and $250 cash prizes will be awarded for those winners. (BoG)

[B]Free abalone workshop on Rota[/B]

The Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research, Extension and Education Service is inviting community members in Rota to a free workshop titled “Grow-Out Requirements for Abalone Production.”

Michael Ogo, NMC-CREES aquaculture program leader, will educate participants on how to grow abalone in their backyards. The free workshop will be held in Room B-2 of NMC’s Tatachog Campus on Rota on Thursday, April 9, 2009 from 1pm to 4pm.

Ogo believes that this is a good time for CNMI residents to look at conducting their own local production of abalone. He added that abalone are easy to grow, and that there is large demand locally and worldwide.
