An unoccupied house in Kagman III was intentionally set on fire Thursday night, bringing to four the number of suspected arson cases on Saipan in the last two months.

No one was hurt in the fire, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro yesterday.

Ogumoro said DPS received a report of a structural fire at a house in Kagman III on Thursday at 6:56pm. Firemen responded to the area and placed the blaze under control at 7:19pm.

Ogumoro said arson investigators reported that the fire was confined to the interior portion of the semi-concrete house and caused severe damage to the inside of the building.

The investigators also determined that the fire originated from within a room at the eastern portion of the house, she said.

“The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire,” said Ogumoro, adding that a 35-year-old male owns the house.

Investigators classified the fire as arson-related.

“This case is pending further investigation. The Fire Division needs the community’s help in providing any information that will help in locating the suspect(s) involved in this case,” Ogumoro said.

Last March 14, a two-story building under renovation in Tanapag was intentionally set ablaze by an unidentified person or persons.

On Feb. 5, an unoccupied house in Afetnas was reportedly intentionally set on fire by an unidentified person or persons.

On Feb. 16, an abandoned house in Kagman III Phase 1 was set on fire by unidentified person or persons. Investigators discovered that an electrical drop line that should have been connected from the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s telephone pole to the house’s electrical meter was no longer there.

As of yesterday, no one has been arrested yet in the four reported arson cases.
