Vacos snares first volleyball crown
Vacos won the championship of the boys’ 18-and-under division of the 2nd Annual Youth Spring Break Volleyball Festival following grueling two-set victory over Ayuyu, 26-24, 25-21, last Saturday at the Gilbert Ada Gymnasium.
Whispering Palms School took the 14-andunder title, while Dandan triumphed in the 12- and-under.
Frandolee Tito and Joemil Lisua took charge at the net with crisp spikes, while Jordan Marciano and John Nekaifes were steady with their serves, as Vacos defused Ayuyu’s late rallies on both sets.
Early in the first set, Vacos erased a 0-4 deficit with six straight points with Nekaifes serving for a 6-4 lead and the team never yielded control after that.
Vacos squandered a set point following a wide return by Tito, a clean block by Ayuyu’s defense, and a long spike by Lisua before winning the first set.
It was also a close game in the second set, but after showing more aggressiveness at the net, Vacos held the lead most of the way.
The other members of the champion team are Allen Joseph Calvo, Hanson Hambros, Willie Aguilar, and Jordan Igisomar. The coaching staff is composed of Tamino Martin and Typhoon Saito.
Runner-up Ayuyu is composed of Albert Duenas, Alfredo Guevarra, Bofan Cabrera, Joseph Kumagai, Kimo Omar, Christian Aguon, Josh Jones, and Ramir Belialba.
In the battle for third, Ol’Aces defeated DARE, 20-17, 19-17.
Ol’Aces’ roster is made up of Eugene Dillay, Jay Charley, Ryan Itchihara, Trevor Ogumoro, Douglas Dillay, A.J. Kileleman, Clayton Kenty, and D.J. Ngirchongor.
A total of six teams joined the boys’ 18-and-under division, including the Kings and Hopwood.
WPS deposed 2008 champion Hilitai and grabbed the perpetual trophy in the 14-and-under division.
Playing for the new champion team were Joon Ko, Clay McCullough-Stearns, Christian Miller, Jake Lee, Cody Race, Tommy Choi, Aaron Lee, and Jae Ko.
In the 12-and-under division, Dandan prevailed over Kagman for its first taste of the perpetual trophy.
