Powerpuffs complete back-to-back title
After a mediocre performance in the preliminary rounds, Powerpuffs easily defeated Alatal Juicy in the championship game, 25-10, 25-18, to complete its back-to-back title quest in the 18-and-under girls division of the 2nd Annual Spring Break Youth Volleyball Festival last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Powerpuffs avoided early elimination as it barely made it to the playoffs after finishing fourth with a 6-4 record behind Starz (8-2), Alatal Juicy (8-2), and Lady Ayuyu (6-4).
Two other teams joined the tournament—Magas and DARE.
It was a completely different campaign from a year ago for Powerpuffs when the team topped the elimination round with eight wins and a lone loss en route to winning their first championship.
Making up the repeat champions are Nicole Lebria, Yvette Bennett, Yvonne Bennett, Dion diaz, Reylynn Sapong, Nikita Hofschneider, Lia Rangamar, and Jacque Wonenberg.
This year’s runner-up team was anchored by Lily Williams, Lena Guzman, Lalaine Pagarao, Marbelyn Asito, Kaylani Lebria, and Rachel Rangamar.
In the battle for third place, the Starz needed three sets to prevail over the Lady Ayuyus, 21-14, 18-16, 15-9.
The Starz said they could have advanced to the finals if not for a snafu in the scheduling that caused them a forfeiture against Powerpuffs in the eliminations.
In the 14-and-under girls, Whispering Palms School made it a double victory for the Navy Hill institution following its win in the boys division.
The WPS girls won over Hopwood in the finals. The champion team was bannered by IIlia Corella, Kristina Folta, Raina Klaver, Amy Arenovski, Phalai Frink, Victoria Chentsova, Marin Nakamura, and Minori Yoshida.
Tottot, meanwhile, defeated Kagman in the finals of the 12-and-under division.
