Family of newborn with open heart surgery seeks help
Barely six days after he was born on March 26, Ethan Jerrell Ramos had an open heart surgery because of a hole in his heart and his left and right arteries were switched. Three days later, his chest was reopened to treat complications.
“After a few days of Ethan in a critical condition, with the grace of God, Ethan is recovering,” said his father, Edgar B. Ramos, who works for Docomo Pacific Guam/Saipan.
As of yesterday, the baby was in the intensive care unit of the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
The family appeals for monetary donation to help defray their child’s medical costs.
The bill is estimated to reach $40,000, but the insurance covers only $15,000.
“The family of Ethan is trying to raise the difference through loans, fundraisers, gifts from friends and selling of properties. We very much appreciate your help toward Ethan’s hospitalization,” said Edgar B. Ramos, who was information systems manager at Docomo Saipan from 2005 to 2007, and later moved to Guam but is still traveling between the two islands because of the job. His wife Juliet moved to Guam early this year.
Edgar and Juliet Ramos can be reached through eramos@docomopacific.com, juliet0521@yahoo.com or (671) 689-5059.
Those who are willing to donate may deposit the money to the mother’s bank account: Juliet Ramos, Bank of Hawaii, 0032-053807.
Ethan Jerell Ramos was born at 6:44 p.m. on March 26. A few hours later, Dr. Meadows of the Guam Memorial Hospital noticed that the baby was not getting enough oxygen.
On March 28, the baby was flown to St. Luke’s Medical Center where he was further diagnosed by Dr. Charles Cuaso, a pediatric cardiologist, with patent ductus arteriusus and vertical septal defect.
In layman’s term, the left and right arteries were switched and there was a hole in the heart.
On April 1, the six-day-old child was operated on to correct the defect. The operation had complications and the baby’s chest was reopened on April 4. After days in critical condition, the baby has since been recovering.
