CNMI Delegate Gregorio “Kilili” C. Sablan announced yesterday the award of $45,287 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to the Northern Marianas to help those living with HIV and AIDS.

The money goes to the CNMI Department of Public Health and will provide medical services and ancillary care to low-income HIV-positive individuals and their families.

“This grant will help our neighbors with HIV and AIDS whose medical needs are greater than their ability to meet those needs,” said Sablan. “I am heartened that with the help of this grant, the Department of Public Health will be able to continue its HIV and AIDS-related services in the Marianas.”

The Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency Act, the source of the grant, helps provide care and treatment for uninsured and underinsured individuals living with HIV and AIDS.

The monies may be used for primary medical care, HIV medications, mental health treatment, substance abuse treatment, oral health, case management, home health care, and nutritional and rehabilitation services. The funds are also used to ensure access to antiretroviral and other drug therapies, including prophylaxis and treatment of opportunistic infections as well as combination antiretroviral therapies.

The CARE Act was signed into law in 1990. The act is named after Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose struggle with AIDS brought HIV and AIDS into public awareness in the mid-1980s. (PR)
