Zoning Office to hire inspectors
The Saipan Zoning Office will be hiring full-time inspectors to ensure that establishments comply with the Saipan zoning law.
Henry H. Hofschneider, chairman of the Zoning Board, said the Zoning office currently has two FTEs who can perform inspections.
But he said acting zoning administrator Therese Ogomuro is in the process of meeting with prospective candidates for zoning officer positions.
“The Zoning board is ready to support Ms. Ogomuro when she is ready to hire two FTEs,” Hofschneider told Saipan Tribune.
He added that the CNMI Zoning Code gave the zoning administrator the power to hire and fire staff, while the Zoning board has the power to hire, as well as fire, the administrator.
Last month, an employee of the Saipan Zoning Office—Jeffrey Dela Cruz of Papago—was arrested for allegedly soliciting a $200 bribe from a businessman in exchange for not citing his business due to noncompliance with zoning rules on banner signs.
The Zoning Office is also hiring a replacement for administrator Steve Tilley, who resigned recently to relocate to the U.S. mainland. In his six years on Saipan, Tilley was instrumental in the drafting and implementation of the zoning law, as well as in implementing the regulations.
Hofschneider added that no board member has been named yet to fill the seventh and only vacant slot on the Zoning board.
