The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. and Guma Esperansa – Karidat are partnering together to offer a two-day training session related to the impending federalization law in the CNMI for attorneys, paralegals and victim service providers.

The organizations are hosting the training, titled “Preparing for the Transition to U.S. Immigration Law,” on Monday and Tuesday in the Napu room of the Pacific Islands Club.

Public Law 110-229 will go into effect Nov. 28, extending U.S. immigration laws to the Commonwealth.

Peggy Gleason, an attorney for the Catholic Legal Immigration Network out of Washington D.C., and Professor Evangeline Abriel of Santa Clara University in California will present the two-day training. A guest speaker from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has also been invited.

Topics covered at the training will include family based immigration in the U.S. under the preference and immediate relative categories; T and U visas for immigrant victims of domestic violence and crime; and an overview of immigration and removal proceedings, according to the event’s announcement.

“The training will aim to provide an overview of these topics, and provide resources for further research and education once the transition takes effect,” the announcement said.

Space is limited to 90 participants.
