MASC thanks sponsors of spearfishing tourney
The organizer of the 3rd Annual Saipan Spearfishing Tournament was happy that the competition went without a hitch and all participants came home safe.
Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club president Morito Asai said while the turnout dropped from 42 last year to 34 last Saturday, he was still content on how the tournament played out.
“As usual everybody come back safe and that’s the most important thing. Even though there was rough condition at the back of island, well-experienced boat operators kept everyone out of harm’s way. We had 34 divers this year compared to 42 from last year. We had a drop [in participants] because some of the guys are off-island and the partners didn’t want to fish with a guy who didn’t know how to [do it well],” he said.
Asai also took time to thank the sponsors of the event, namely MARPAC Budweiser, Kashima Kanko Japan, O.ME.R Italy, NTT Docomo Pacific, Waterway Ukraine, Fishing Tackle, Shell Marianas, and Aquasmith Dive Shop.
He also thanked Saipan Fishermen’s Association, Division of Fish and Wildlife, American Memorial Park, MRC, Rep. Joe Guerrero, Rep. Ray Tebuteb, Rep. Diego Benavente, Senate President Pete Reyes, volunteer weigh masters, Gene Weaver, Mike Tenorio, Katz Aldan, record master Richard Seman, Suzette Sasamoto, Jashim Udin, boat volunteers, Karl Reyes, Greg Camacho Sr., Greg Camacho Jr., Mr. Beches, and boat operators for making the event successful.
The 2009 edition of the Spearfishing Tournament saw Guamanians Myles Driscoll and Mike “Todd” Genereux win the individual and team competitions.
Driscoll topped the solo division with his haul of 86 lbs. followed by Genereux (64.5 lbs.) and Saipan’s Scott Russell (49 lbs.).
Driscoll and Genereux teamed up to win the team competition with their total catch of 150.5 lbs. Scott Russell and Peter Houk, the defending champions, finished second with 75.5 lbs., while Felix and Greg Sasamoto settled for third place with their 64 lbs.
