Gus Kaipat, Saipan’s local favorite musician and lead singer of Olomwaay, recently performed solo for a crowd gathered at California State University for a pre-screening of a soon-to-be completed PBS documentary on the Commonwealth.

Kaipat was flown to California earlier this month to work with award-winning editor and sound mixer and composer Todd Boekelheide, who was hired to compose the score for the film Insular Empire: America in the Marianas.

Film director, co-producer and cinematographer Vanessa Warheit of Horse Opera Productions told Kaipat: “I really want to include your ‘local’ sensibilities and musical talent in the score.”

This important documentary film explores the political relationship between the United States, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
