Different themes are highlighted in the Summer Component of the Northern Marianas College Upward Bound Program, which will run from June 20 to July 29.

Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program designed to help public high school students prepare for college by providing support for their college entrance and opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately, in their higher education pursuits.

The program, which aims to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college, primarily serves public high school students from low-income families or from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.

Hedwig Hofschneider, guidance specialist, said the Summer Component, which accepts incoming sophomores to seniors, kicked off with a banquet on June 17.

Hofschneider said the Summer Component, attended by an average of 20 to 25 students, features six themes for each week, which include Communication Skills, Career Search, Healthy Living, Research Skills, Environmental Awareness, and Financial Skills.

“We thought about themes that would really help the students prepare not only for college but also in their chosen careers,” he told Saipan Tribune.

Hofschneider said the Summer Component is also being offered in their satellite campuses on Tinian and Rota.

He also said different speakers have been invited to discuss with students various topics related to the themes.

According to Hofschneider, they do not require students to attend the whole duration of the Summer Component as they can choose whatever themes they want to learn more about.

“We understand that some of these students have work or are part of other summer programs. We don’t want to discourage them from coming in any time,” he explained.

Hofschneider said the Summer Component will also give students tasks or assignments related to the theme for each week.

“We usually hand out certificates at the end of the Summer Component,” he added.
