HONOLULU, Hawaii—The Pacific Islands region will house an additional 188,000 people this month making Oceania’s total population reach a major milestone of 10 million.

According to Radio Australia, the increase in population will put more pressure on the region’s limited natural and economic resources.

Dr. Gerald Haberkorn, manager of the Statistics for Development Program at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, said that at the current rate of growth, the region will host 20 million in 35 years.

Haberkorn told Radio Australia that there is no quick fix to mass migrations destined for larger Pacific countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Guam. Numbers will continue to rise naturally because as he says, there is no stop to the “growth momentum.” People and number of births will multiply every year because it’s a natural process. (Pacific Islands Report)
