Wings Travel notches second win
Wings Travel recovered from a sluggish start en route to a 69-56 victory over Star Water in the 2011 Blue Haus Invitational Basketball League on Tuesday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.
The win was the second in three games for Wings Travel, putting the team in second place in Pool A behind the unbeaten Inchcape (2-0). The loss was the second in as many games for Star Water and the squad remains at the bottom of the six-team Pool A, sharing the last spot with Micronesian Brokers, Inc. (0-2) and Aldrin (0-2). Pacific Postal/Mekeni (1-0), 8th Division (1-0) complete the field. The league has two more pools with B and C also having seven teams each.
Playing only its third game of the season and first after more than two weeks, Wings Travel took off on a wrong foot and fell behind early, 2-8. Then a triple from hotshot Edgar Pangelinan started things out for Wings Travel. Pangelinan went on to can three more field goals, while Dennis Morales also found his form later on, scoring five points to lift Wings Travel to a 20-14 lead.
The advantage ballooned to double digits at halftime, 37-24, as Pangelinan continued to hit his target and his teammates also stepped in. Five other Wings Travel players lit up the scoreboard in the second canto.
In contrast, only three players scored for Star Water in the second canto. June Pineda and Jomar Tengco nailed four points apiece, while Larry Achas added two markers.
Star Water played catch-up most of the way in the second half, but could only cut the lead to as low as five points. Morales made clutch baskets for Wings Travel in the third canto to foil Star Water’s repeated comeback bids. The lefty drilled seven straight points at the start of the third period and added six more in the closing stage of the frame to keep Wings Travel on top, 54-45.
Wings Travel preserved the lead and the win in the fourth, as it still outgunned Star Water with the former knocking in seven field goals against the latter’s five.
Action in the Blue Haus caging continued last night with Joeten Superstores scheduled to meet Mutombo in Pool B match at 6pm and GPPC and Marianas Water set to collide in the Pool C game at 8pm.
