Buenaventura returns to Rotary
Calvo’s Insurance general manager Eli Buenaventura was inducted back to the Rotary Club of Saipan during its meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan yesterday.
Rotary acting president Pete Shilling sponsored and inducted Buenaventura, who inadvertently said “masonry” instead of Rotary during his oath taking, which set the Rotarians laughing.
Shilling, who worked with Buenaventura in the Northern Marianas Insurance Association for the last four years, described the returning Rotarian as “very industry-minded and very ethical guy to work with.”
“I am very happy to be able to sponsor Eli back into the Rotary Club and I am equally honored to be able to be inducting him today,” he said.
Buenaventura, in his remarks, said he took a leave of absence from the Rotary for four years when his eldest son attended college and recently finished his degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
“Now that he is done, it’s time to give something back to the community,” he said.
Buenaventura served as past president of the Filtaga Golfers Association and the Northern Marianas Tennis Association.
He was also the past master of Emon Lodge No. 179, a military lodge originally from Kwajalein Atoll of the Republic of the Marshall Islands that moved to Saipan in the early ’90s when the U.S. downsized its military operations worldwide.
“Community involvement is not alien to me,” said Buenaventura.
Buenaventura asked to be enlisted in the Rotary’s various programs and looks forward to a more sociable and enjoyable interaction with the club, which is known for its motto, “Service Above Self.”
“As the song line aptly puts it, love is lovelier the second time around,” added Buenaventura.
