SHRM meeting to discuss changes to EEO law affecting CNMI
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) CNMI Chapter is pleased to announce its August general membership lunch meeting topic “Changes to the Equal Employment Opportunity Law That Affect the CNMI,” which will be presented by Derek W. Li, senior trial attorney for the Los Angeles District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
The lunch meeting will be held at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Hibiscus Room on Friday, Aug. 19, from 11:30am to 1:30pm.
This timely presentation is open to the public and will be an invaluable opportunity for both employers and employees to learn about updates to Equal Employment Opportunity law and the roles of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Li will discuss important topics such as:
– Trends in EEOC charges and fines;
– Supreme Court update on class certification and class action, retaliation, and the Cat’s Paw Theory;
– Credit and background checks;
– Impact of the economy on older workers;
– Human trafficking and forced labor;
– Caregiver discrimination;
– Pregnancy discrimination, and other topics.
The EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 and older), disability or genetic information. It is also illegal to discriminate against a person because the person complained about discrimination, filed a charge of discrimination, or participated in an employment discrimination investigation or lawsuit. Equal Opportunity Law applies to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits. If individuals and/or organizations do not follow EEO laws, they can find themselves in litigation with the federal government and face costly settlements and claims for punitive damages. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to brush up on the newest changes to EEO law by attending this presentation.
The presentation includes lunch and the cost is $20 for SHRM members and $30 for non-members. Seats are limited, so reserve your seat by contacting Polly DLG Masga at 237-5122 or e-mail her at pollydlg@gmail.com. (SHRM)
