Five individuals from Saipan and 10 from Guam have signed up for the Holiday Tour Micronesia volunteer work, which aims to allow volunteers to go to Japan at their own expense to help out in the reconstruction efforts in areas heavily damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in March.

Holiday Tour Micronesia volunteer work is a collaborative effort of Holiday Tour Micronesia in Guam and the Morioka Branch Office of Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd. in Japan.

Morioka in Iwate Prefecture will be the focus of the volunteer work, which will be conducted for five days and four nights.

Yoichi Matsumura of Pacific Development Inc. said this prefecture is “quite far” from Fukushima 1 Nuclear Power Plant, which had a nuclear meltdown after it suffered major damage during the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

“We would like to entice as much people to join in this volunteer program,” he told Saipan Tribune.

Matsumura said that Continental Airlines offers a special rate for program participants. Each volunteer from Saipan will have to pay $1,610 for airfare, meals, and twin sharing room accommodation. Those who want to stay in a single room will have to pay an additional $260 each.

He said Continental Airlines will accept the booking for this volunteer work until Aug. 31.

Matsumura said all volunteers will meet with the Iwate Prefecture Social Worker Association, which will brief them about the work plan.

He also noted that the Sendai Airport, which was also affected during the March catastrophe, has already secured its clearance and authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration.

To volunteer or for more information, call Matsumura at 322-8770 or 287-8785.
