Three more records fell during the second leg of the Tsunami Swim Circuit Series held last Saturday at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

Lukas Kang, who had two record-breaking swims in the first leg on Nov. 12, shattered two more marks in the CNMI boys U8 age group last weekend, while Angel Marie Tan made up for her slow start at the beginning of the series with one record in the second leg.

Eight-year-old Kang completed the 100m butterfly event in 1:22.63 to reset his previous record of 1:28.95 made on Feb. 4, 2011. Then in the 50m breaststroke, the Garapan Elementary School student timed in at 45.75 seconds to surpass the 46.53 Ryuto Yanai posted on May 27, 2011.

In the first leg, Kang logged 1:23.74 in the 100m backstroke event to break the 1:26.54 he submitted on Feb. 5, 2011. The Tsunami Saipan swimmer also raced in the 50m freestyle and clocked in at 34.33 seconds to eclipse the 36.18 seconds mark of Ryuto Yanai (April 16, 2011), but Yanai eventually kept the mark, as he did the same race and timed in at 33.85 seconds.

With his three records this month, Kang now owns seven CNMI age group marks. The list also includes the 50m backstroke (40.82 seconds), 100m breaststroke (1:40.77), 50m butterfly (37.36 seconds), and 200m individual medley (3:04.92).

Meanwhile, Tan now holds five CNMI records in the girls 11 to 12 age group after setting a new one in the 50m backstroke. He finished the race in 35.92 seconds, chopping off .04 of a second from the previous record of Saipan Swim Club’s Myana Welch, who timed in at 35.96 seconds on April 26, 2002.

Tan’s four other girls 11 to 12 marks are from the 50m breaststroke (39.06 seconds/April 15, 2011), 200m breaststroke (2:59.37/Feb. 5, 2011), 50m butterfly (34.39 seconds/Oct. 15, 2011), and the 400m IM (6:01.04/April 15, 2011).

Tan also swam in the 100m butterfly race last Saturday and timed in at 1:19.02, which is close to the age record mark of 1:18.17.

The Tsunami Saipan-organized swim circuit will resume next month with the third leg set for Dec. 3 and the last on Dec. 10. Tsunami Saipan is hosting the series to give CNMI swimmers chances to improve their times and eventually set new Commonwealth records.
