By a vote of 16-0, Saipan lawmakers passed a bill renaming the Kagman Fire Station to the “Ernie T. Dela Cruz Fire Station #5” in honor of the late firefighter, Ernie Teigita Dela Cruz.

Dela Cruz worked as a firefighter III for the Department of Public Safety’s Fire Division for more than 17 years prior to his untimely passing during a physical training exercise at work.

House Local Bill 18-20, authored by Rep. Antonio Agulto (Ind-Saipan), now goes to the governor for action after the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation’s Wednesday passage.

The late Dela Cruz, according to the local bill, was dedicated and committed to serving the CNMI people and positively impacted those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was actively involved in many civic activities in his community, and volunteered in numerous school and church activities.

The bill says Dela Cruz’s sudden passing “was a great loss” to the CNMI.

The renaming of the fire station after his name is to honor his memory and contributions to the CNMI people and DPS Fire Division.

Once the measure is signed into local law, the new name is supposed to be prominently affixed at the main entrance to the fire station in Kagman.
