Thespians present ‘A Christmas Carol’

Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands are happy to present a show for the holiday season! A Christmas Carol is based on the famous novel by Charles Dickens but with a different twist in this adaptation by Michael Paller. Devonne Dotts directs the action.
“This play will be an excellent learning experience for me. I have always enjoyed Dickens’ work. I remember watching this story around the holiday season. It feels right to be involved as a director intern,” said Dotts.
MHS student Bruce Li takes on the lead role of Charles Dickens and Scrooge.
Charles Dickens acts the role of Scrooge as he writes the story. His guests, friends, and family who are visiting for Christmas help him develop his ideas by putting on an impromptu play as he writes it. This is a play within a play that takes place in a Victorian attic. The attic is used by Charles Dickens as his writing den. His efforts for a Christmas tale is in progress on Dickens’ desk in the attic when he is visited by his own spirit muse.
Much like Scrooge, Dickens is having difficulties. As his guests join him, he writes. He and his guests disguise themselves to become various characters of the emerging story by donning different clothes and props from what they can find in the attic, and the magic unfolds. Dickens as Scrooge, a stingy old man, clomps around the attic, which transforms to become his money business and his bedroom and Cratchit’s house and the graveyard, while his friends in turn play Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Fezziwig, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. This classic tale is heartwarming and perfect for the whole family.
A Christmas Carol by Michael Paller, based on the novel by Charles Dickens, will be staged on Wednesday, Dec. 18, and Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at 7pm at the MHS Dolphin Theatre. Tickets are available from students and also at the door. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
