Christmas floats, spirit occupy streets of Garapan

Seven schools showcased their creativity and Christmas spirit in the Parade of Floats last Saturday, with hundreds of residents and tourists lining the streets of Garapan to watch the short procession that led to the Paseo de Marianas, where a caroling competition followed.
Participating schools included San Vicente Elementary, Green Meadow School, Kagman Elementary, Mt. Carmel Elementary, Golden Harvest International School, Kagman High School, and Koblerville Elementary.
“It took us the entire day to prepare this float and several months to come up with the design and decorations,” said Abrahama Amirez, a Kagman High School teacher. “We went with the theme ‘Let there be peace, joy, and love this Christmas.’”
Each of the participating schools had to prepare, design, and manufacture their own float using recycled materials only.
For some schools, like the Golden Harvest International School, it was their first time to join the “environmentally friendly” float competition.
“It took us one month to make out float,” said the school’s principal, Marilyn Divino. “[For our school], this event is very significant because this is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, which is the true meaning of Christmas. We are also recycling and using old materials, we are saving the Earth.”
One Saipan resident who attended the event described the floats as “fantastic.” “I love all the creativity and spirit events like these brings,” she added.
MINA representatives judged the floats.
“We’ll have to wait for the results to see who ultimately was the best and most creative,” said Becky Furey, one of the judges. “All the natural materials and recycled materials they used really brought out the Christmas spirit in a unique way.”
