Athletes get international exposure
CNMI athletes continued to have opportunities to compete in off-island tournaments this year.
In January, swimmer Kensuke Kimura represented the CNMI in the 6th Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
In June, the CNMI competed in 2013 Asia Pacific-Middle East Baseball Tournament in the Philippines.
Also in June, the Northern Marianas Athletics sent five athletes to the 2013 Oceania Area Championships held in Tahiti.
In July, volleyball players Clay McCullough-Stearns and John Nekaifes participated in the beach volleyball competition in the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.
In July, Rezne Wong, Victoria Chentsova, Angel De Jesus, and Kensuke Kimura joined the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, while Jesus Iguel represented the CNMI in the 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
In September, 11 players from Northern Marianas Badminton Association competed in the 2nd GNBF Annual Summer Friendship Badminton Tournament in Dededo, Guam.
In October, Butch Sublemente, Peter Prestley, and Lewie Tenorio saw action in the 2013 XTERRA World Championship in Maui, Hawaii, while MP United players also left the island late October to participate in the 2013 Pilipinas Cup International Invitational Youth Tournament in Laguna, Philippines.
The CNMI’s junior tennis players were the last to compete in off-island tournaments this year with Carol Lee, Chris Cajigan, and Michael Ren heading to Australia.
