Adult education to address learning disabilities
The Adult Basic Education program at the Northern Marianas College will upgrade its courses to address the needs of students with learning disabilities.
Its administrators and teachers will be trained to identify enrollees with learning disabilities by bringing out techniques to enhance their skills.
Learning disabilities will include persons with visual or audio impairment and other form of physical handicapped.
According to ABE Director Fe Calixterio, a training workshop on learning disabilities is set in Hawaii this February and local representatives are scheduled to attend it.
The ABE program has been criticized for its inability to assist students with special needs.
“I think they were right because we haven’t had any training. We don’t even test the students (to tell their difficulties). We don’t even ask them if they have problems with their learning capabilities,” she said.
The workshop will cover skills on identifying learning disabilities and how to specifically deal with each case.
The program intends to offer all courses on literacy and life skills to this special group within the regular class.
“We will be teaching the same skills but we just want to be sensitive of their needs,” she said.
