A construction company is seeking the right to hold Hard Rock Cafe’s lease at the Duty Free Shoppers Galleria building as payment for a $108,973.55 debt.

Fletcher Pacific Construction Co. Ltd. says the debt represents the costs of labor and materials to set up the cafe, which opened middle of last year.

“This lien is claimed separately and severally on the lease between HRC and DFS Saipan covering the real property as well as on the improvements constructed on the property,” states Fletcher’s application for a lien.

The case of Hard Rock has been the latest evidence of the slump in the local economy, hobbled by a weakened tourist industry.

A hearing has been set for Jan. 20 for the lien application.
