The implementation of the Workforce Investment Act this July will require the Northern Marianas College to work collaboratively with the employment and training agencies in the CNMI.

It puts NMC, Job Training and Partnership Act, and the Department of Labor and Immigration in partnership to prepare individuals for the job market.

The college was named as the State Education Agency, which will administer the three programs that fall under this act, namely, adult basic education, workforce development and family literacy.

According to ABE Director Fe Calixterio, NMC will get over $200,000 federal funding to run these three programs starting July. However, the new law will require NMC to work with both agencies to attune its courses with the needs of the job market.

“We should know from DOLI the current number of unemployed persons, how many people need additional skills and what are those,” she said.

Her recent meeting with DOLI, however, presented certain limitations for the program since recent employment provisions allow contract workers to have multi-skills and to transfer from one job to another.

For the meantime such DOLI provisions exist, NMC and JTPA have committed to work together to continue to serve out-of-school youth and adults who are in school for non-employment related reasons and to motivate them to pursue the program for employment-related outcomes.
