The Commonwealth is the only insular area to meet the grant application standard set by the National Center for Educational Statistics on future programs that will expand local tracking of students and financial management.

The grant application endorsed by the Public School System was verified by NCES to have properly completed the new five year contract for the U.S. Department of Education statistical work.

According to Federal Programs Officer William P. Matson, the funding for this fiscal year is about $120,000 which will mean some $500,000 money for PSS in the next five years.

“We’re so far, we’re so tiny but we can do things right,” he said.

By doing things right, not only did PSS listed CNMI as part of the 16 states that successfully completed the five year contract, but its funding will help implement the financial management system and gather data on students.

Currently, PSS has procured new equipment and software to launch its new financial management system.

“The ultimate goal is to determine the cost per student. Like how much would it cost to educate a second grader in Tanapag compared to a second grader on Rota,” Matson said in an interview.

However, he emphasized that this funding is non-classroom money.
