HONOLULU (Hulsen) — A California woman, visiting Hawaii for her honeymoon, is presumed dead after a night time shark attack this week in waters between the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Kaho’olawe.

Newlyweds Nahid Davoodabadi, and husband, Mark Monazzami were in a two-man kayak when it was blown offshore south of Lahaina, Maui during afternoon
high winds. According to Monazzami, the couple were huddling in the water to stay warm when a shark tore off one of his wife’s arms. He says she a died about 40 minutes later of her injury. Her body has not been recovered.

Monazzami floated at sea until he was blow ashore on the uninhabited island of Kaho’olawe. The 39-year-old man found a bunker that was being used as a storage locker by workers, who were there to clean up military debris from the former bomb test-site and called for help.

Monazzami says there was no warnings posted at the beach for small crafts, but, he says the kayak rental did warn the couple about high winds and urged them to launch near Lahaina.

This is the third shark attack in the Island chain during the past month.
