Liberating Liberation Day Cmte.
This isn’t the first time that complaints are aired by booth operators emerging out of vacillating decisions from the Liberation Day Committee.
For instance, two years ago the sale of beer at the carnival ground was limited to certain concessions. Hardly anybody knows that such a decision existed. When booths started selling beer, certain concessions were told to cease sale until they secure licenses from the Liberation Day Committee. They followed instructions only to find out that such license is limited to a handful.
This year, a businessman applied and was granted a license for a small gambling concession. He was allegedly informed by someone on the committee that such gambling license is limited to one. He found out later that someone else was operating the same business at the carnival ground. He sought for answers from the committee and a refund of his money to no avail.
The repeat of vacillation or ill-conceived decisions have been met with disappointment by small businesses who were allegedly denied what everybody else had on the fastest moving item: beer; or the violation of exclusivity on their license.
Most issues are misunderstood because of the lack of information of committee decisions governing the rules of the entire event.
It is obvious since several years ago that the Liberation Day Committee never had its act together. Thus, it became the very source of disgruntled booth operators for vacillating decisions or lack of planning and organization to ensure smooth sailing from the outset. If the committee feels otherwise, then it must read the statement of last year’s Fourth of July Queen publicly aired in last Sunday’s grand event. The young queen’s complaint didn’t spin-out of thin air. It is legitimate and the committee must resolve it once and for all.
The historic occasion is supposed to be a festive community event. It must be organized well in advance with sufficient public information of specific decisions governing operation of concessions, float preparation, aimed at bringing and harnessing harmony among members of the Northern Marianas Community. Such should and must be central in the work of the Liberation Day Committee.
Perhaps it is time to liberate the Liberation Day Committee by revamping it altogether and ascertaining that it has the legal authority to conduct business within legal confines. It muste exit its usual habit of playing ostrich when confronted with hard questions originating from their penchant to vacillate on decisions. Si Yuus Maase` yan ghilisow!
