Inos seeks creation of new team to evaluate teacher performance
Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos said the Public School System is creating a new team that would evaluate teachers’ performances based on what are expected of them.
Inos said the creation of this team is part of the education agency’s efforts to improve the quality of teaching in public schools.
The evaluation process would be based on the teaching performance criteria and personal conduct criteria drafted by PSS and adopted by the Board of Education in 1997.
A focus team, which was formed during the school year, was assigned to review teachers’ current practices and evaluation instruments.
“This work was met with enthusiasm by our teachers but had to be put on hold for the remainder of the school year due to our teachers’ insecurity over their future employment with PSS as a result of our budget crisis,” Inos said in a memorandum to BOE chairman Esther Fleming.
“Now, the worst is over us and we are able to move forward with our much need improvements in the area of teacher quality and high student performances,” she added.
Inos said the new team will be convened “in the coming months” to take the task.
Under the BOE guidelines, a teacher is expected to “possess detailed knowledge and understanding of the subject matter to be taught,” as well the ability to communicate with his or her students.
The evaluation will also be based on the teachers’ attendance and tardiness. (MCM)
