Are you dreaming of a chance to play a Shakespeare or a Dickens character? Or simply aspiring to be in the theater? Well, dream no more. Just grab this opportunity.

The Marianas High School Speech and Drama Program begins a new season for school year 1999-2000, drama teacher Harold Easton announced Friday.

“The total number of events in school year 1998-1999 was over 30; the goal for the year is 2,000 and more,” Easton said.

The program is designed to lure not only students who are interested in theater arts, but also those interested in singing, public speaking, and radio productions.

The Speech & Drama program is coordinated by students who belong to the MHS Chapter of the International Thespian Society, which is composed of students from grade 10 and above.

The Thespian Society is composed of different groups, each specialized in certain areas.

One of the groups is the MHS Productions, which produces stage plays. During the 1998-1999 season, the MHS Production staged an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” at Garapan Elementary School and at the Commonwealth Heath Center.

Another major production by this group was The Spring Musical, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.”

Theaters arts is expected to draw more public attention with the construction of a 75 to 90-seat theater on MHS campus, which is now fully operational, according to Easton.

Other groups within the Society are:

•MHS Technical Services, which provides technical assistance such as lights and sounds;

•The National Forensic League, which is in charge of interscholastic speech and debate competitions;

• The KMHS Radio Club, which sponsored the first dances held at MHS; and

• The MHS Theater Sports Team and the Sades Singing Group, the two newest groups. (MCM)
