There were a total of four babies born during the new year to lucky parents on Saipan, becoming among the first U.S. citizens of this millennium.

The first was a baby boy weighing 5 pounds 5 ounces, who was delivered at 12:40 a.m. on Jan. 1. His parents were Filipino nationals. The second was a baby girl born to Chamorro parents at 7:10 a.m., followed by another girl who came out at 4:10 p.m.

The fourth baby, a boy born to Chamorro parents, arrived at 5:35 p.m. According to the Commonwealth Health Center officials, all babies were healthy and were doing fine.

At least two private companies have sponsored separate contests to award the first baby born in 2000 on Saipan with various prizes, including baby supplies. (Lucy Rosario)
