Now that the school year is half over, do an evaluation of how your children have performed. At the same time you will be able to predict how they will be do in the coming second half. Any prudent parent will periodically check his child’s progress. From past performance, you can fairly well predict the second half of your child’s school achievement.

Begin with a discussion with your child about how he feels he has done in school. Ask him not only about his studies but his relationship with his teachers and fellow students. Does he have any problems that he should be telling you? Seek them out with frank discussions.

Visit his teacher and discuss your child’s scholastic achievement. Is he reading on his grade level or is he below grade level? If he is having trouble, what action should be taken by both you and the teacher to help the child. How is his math ability and comprehension? Again ask the teacher if he is doing grade level work. If not, what action can both of you take to raise the child to the proper level.

Ask yourself how much time and attention have you contributed to his success in school? Are you conscious of his attitude towards school, friends and himself? What does your child really enjoy or like doing? What does he not enjoy or not like doing? Are you making sure that he is practicing good personal hygiene and eating nutritious food?

If your feeling is strong that you have been doing the best for your child, you can be secure in believing that he will enjoy the same success he has now in the remainder of the school year because your continuing love and care will guide him to success. If your reactions are weak, you still have another half semester to strengthen them and guide your child. Do it now!

The Value Of Experience

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things mechanical. After 30 years of working loyally for the same company, he happily retired. Several years later the company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multimillion dollar machines. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine to work, but to no avail.

In desperation, they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer reluctantly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day, he marked a small ” x ” in chalk on a particular component of the machine and stated, ” This is where your problem is.”

The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again. The company received a bill for $50,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemized accounting of his charges. The engineer responded briefly: “One chalk mark $1; Knowing where to put it $49,000.

It was paid in full and the engineer retired again in peace.
