PREL workshop for community learning

This program provides grants to enable schools to plan, implement or expand projects that benefit the educational, health, social services, cultural and recreational needs of the community.

Applicant schools are required to collaborate with other public and nonprofit agencies and organizations, local businesses, educational entities, recreational, cultural, and other community and human service entities. A Community Learning Center is an entity within a public elementary, middle or secondary school building.

More specifically applicants must show a partnership with other community organizations and must address at least four of the following thirteen activities:

1. Literacy education programs

2. Senior citizen programs

3. Children’s day care services

4. Integrated education, health social service, recreational or cultural, programs.

5. Summer and weekend school programs in connection with recreation programs

6. Nutritional and health programs

7. Expanded library service hours

8. Telecommunications and technology education programs for individual of all ages

9. Parenting skills education programs

10. Support and training for child day care providers

11. Employment counseling, training, and placement

12. Services for individuals who leave school before graduation from secondary school, regardless of the age of such individuals

13. Services for individuals with disabilities

PREL will be offering a workshop to assist in applying for grants under the 21st CCLC program. The workshop will help potential applicants plan and implement high-quality after-school programs, and will feature:

• Technical assistance – tips on how to prepare the grant application

• Research results

• Examples of high-quality after school programs and activities

• Grant writing

The workshop will be held on Feb. 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Flores Gardenia Conference Room of the Pacific Gardenia Hotel. Lunch will be provided.

Individual assistant will be available the afternoon of the workshop and Feb. 8, 2000 all day at the PREL CNMI Service Center.
