Youth Baseball League opens
A jampacked crowd was on hand to witness the opening of the 2000 Millennium Baseball Season, the Junior League, Senior League and Big League Divisions under the Little League Baseball umbrella.
The Junior League is made up with six teams age 13-14, Senior League with four teams age 14-16 and the Big League with four teams age 16-18.
The Junior Division is an extension program from players that graduated a year or two years ago from the Little League Division.
The opening ceremony started out with the team parade assisted by the color guards from the M.H.S. Jr. R.T.O.C. and the crowd was electrified with the awesome sweet voice of Nicolete Salas Lopez who sang the U.S. and Marianas Anthems.
Rep. Tom B. Pangelinan delivered the special remarks that recognized the business community for their contribution and support despite the slump in the economy.
Mr. Pangelinan also congratulated all managers, coaches and volunteers for making all the extra efforts in putting up a team. “It is definitely a hard task and these volunteers should be commended for their extra valuable time of theirs for our children.” he said.
The official ceremonial pitch was thrown by Senior League commissioner Joe Salas and behind the plate was Junior League commissioner Robert Magofna, Mario Taitano, the World Series Umpire in the 1999 Little League World Series was the Man in Blue, and Rep. Pangelinan was the batter.
First pitch to Mr. Pangelinan was way outside for a ball. Mr. Salas then delivered a straight fast ball and Mr. Pangelinan greeted it with a routine grounder to short.
In the early 1980s, according to the Saipan Major League official stats, he was known for beating routine grounders, with a record of 6-3-1 down.
