Youth leaders invited to educational trips
Youth Congress Senators are set to fly to three different places this year to represent CNMI in several educational trips.
Youth Senator Joshua Blalock has been appointed to take part in the 19th Annual Pacific Islands Conference which will take place in American Samoa from June 20 to 23.
The Division of Environmental Quality has requested the 2nd CNMI Youth Congress to participate in the conference, the travel expenses of which will be shouldered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region IX.
DEQ specifically asked the Youth Congress to send a representative who is familiar with environmental issues.
Mr. Blalock, as head of the Youth Congress Committee on Natural Resources, was chosen to take on the task.
“The conference is essential due to the finite resources and fragile environment that Pacific Islands present. In order to preserve our islands efficiently so that future generations could enjoy the same environment as we have, Pacific Islanders must unite and share the most effective ways to prolong the integrity of our islands,” said DEQ.
The Public School System is also laying out plans to send three youth leaders to a character-building workshop in Chicago some time this year.
But plans are still tentative, according to Youth Congress Speaker Angel Demapan.
The San Vicente Church is also eyeing to send one youth senator to an event which will coincide with August’s World Youth Day Celebration in Europe.
The travel package costs $4,000 per participant, excluding hotel allowance.
Mr. Demapan expressed gratitude to the agencies for recognizing and choosing the youth group to represent CNMI in the trips.
“Other agencies have yet to know of our existence but we are thankful for this recognition,” Mr. Demapan told a youth congress session yesterday.
Youth senators have agreed to vote on the representative who will go on the 20-day pilgrimage in Europe.
