What started out as a class project on Environmental Awareness, has turned into a College Lab School tradition!

Last school year, the NMC School of Education College Lab School was involved in a thematic unit entitled, “Saving Our Environment”. During Spring 1999 student teacher Velma De Leon Guerrero and Debra M. Whitt, a master teacher at the College Lab School, approached the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and signed up to adopt a public beach to clean. Based on the availability of beaches, class size and enrollment of the College Lab School, Ladder Beach was selected.

According to Ms. Whitt, “The upper grades (fourth and fifth) along with their teachers and supportive parents were more than happy to continue the beach clean up this school year!”

In school years to come, the Lab School hopes to continue the tradition of caring for our environment.

On Wednesday, April 26th, DEQ representatives presented a plaque to the College Lab School students for their dedication and outstanding contribution in keeping our environment clean.

The students and teachers hope to inspire others to do the same!

Frank Tudela, overall chair of Environmental Awareness Week; Glenn Arriola, Environmental Awareness Sub-Committee chairman of the Adopt-A-Beach Program; and Kevin Castro, public information officer of DEQ, presented the Recognition Plaque to the NMC School of Education College Lab School students:
