It was a starry-starry night at Pacific Gardenia Saturday evening as locally renowned music artists performed their hit songs in support of the Saipan fast-pitched softball team who are headed to Utah for a world preparation tournament this year.

Local celebrities such as the Kool Change Band, Jess Castro, Roman Tudela Jr., JJ Concepcion, and Alex “the Colonel” Sablan awed the crowd with live renditions of local as well as pop music during the weekend concert.

The night was filled with singing and dancing as 1999 local artist of the year Kevin Atalig also regaled the event with a medley of songs he has popularized throughout the years.

The fundraiser concert, according to Saipan Softball Association president Robert Guerrero, is only one among the association’s many efforts in raising its target amount for the international trip.

The entire group is aiming to raise at least $57,000 for the five-day trip.

“We’re gradually getting there. Last week we had the bowling tournament and for the next couple of weekends, we have scheduled various fundraisers,” he said.

The group headed by Mr. Guerrero is a member of the international softball federation with participants from other softball enthusiasts worldwide.

This year, the Saipan team has been invited to attend the world preparation softball tournament which is also in anticipation of the real world tournament in Africa in 2001, according to Mr. Guerrero.

The international tournament is participated by teams from 40 states, Jamaica, Argentina, and possibly Germany.

The CNMI team will be represented by 25 official delegates to this event.

“This is a very competitive and challenging event for our players,” said Mr. Guerrero.
He further added that the CNMI can expect his team to win in the international games.

The weekend fundraiser was sponsored by Marpac, Pacific Gardenia, CNMI Arts Council, CNMI Travel Agency, and Budget Car Rental. (MM)
