Bush fundraising dinner postponed
The $250-per-head dinner scheduled for June 14 at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino to raise funds for U.S. presidential candidate George W. Bush has been postponed to a later date .
House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial, chair of the George W. Bush for President Committee for the CNMI, said the postponement was due to the busy activities by the campaign head committee in the mainland in preparation for the July convention.
Republican leaders, members and supporters are expected to gather in that event to kick-off official campaign of the party for the November 2000 presidential election.
“They did not have time to look into our activities. They did not have time to send out all the materials that we need, including all the approvals we have requested for,” said Mr. Fitial in an interview yesterday.
He said that the head campaign committee must approve all the activities lined up by the CNMI organizers and pay for the costs, including the June 14 fundraiser. A new schedule has yet been set “until further notice.”
The first of the activities on the island, the dinner at the Dynasty would have invited a friend of the Bush family, former Ambassador Fred Zeder, as one of its special guests. The CNMI committee had hoped to raise over $80,000 for the campaign of the Republican bet.
Mr. Bush, son and namesake of former President George Bush, will face Democratic bet Vice President Al Gore this November.
