One of the most awaited cultural events of the year begins today.

The 19th Flame Tree Arts Festival, an annual activity which underwent months of intensive preparation, will be jump-started with a non-stop all-band performance at 6:00 p.m. tonight.

The inaugural concert will also feature solo performers both from off-island and the neighboring Micronesian islands.

The weekend affair promises more fun-filled activities this year with over 20,000 expected guests and participants, according to the CNMI Council for the Arts and Culture, the project organizers.

Added attractions like canoe rides and races plus 100 ethnically-inspired booths will keep visitors busy during the three-day event.

Further, it will also exhibit production performers from Guam, Marshall Islands, Palau, Yap, Pohnpei, China, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.

State officials from the Republic of Palau are set to attend the festival, adding to the long line of distinguished guests expected to grace the event. Three Palauan governors, Tadashi Sakuma of the Ngaraard state, John B. Skebong of the Ngaremlengui state, and Jackson Ngiraingas of the Peleliu state, are on island to attend the festival.

The Marianas Visitors Authority is this year’s biggest government sponsor.

Organizers also received strong support from corporate sponsors including Mobil, GTE Pacifica, and Duty Free Shoppers Galleria. (MM)
