The Northern Marianas College Board of Regents has reinforced the promotion of a free and open learning institution through a board policy pushing for full academic freedom and responsibility among students and teachers at CNMI’s lone college.

BOR policy 3004 or the NMC Academic Freedom and Responsibility calls for students and teachers to explore and exhaust all media by which students and teachers could further stir learning at the college.

This policy guarantees the student body as well as the faculty their inviolable right to education in any reasonable way it is expressed.

Although the college administration has allowed such freedom at NMC campuses, the board saw it fit to underscore on the importance of a truly free institution where students and teachers can freely discuss and debate over timely, relevant issues.

“This policy will give students and instructors a wider latitude of learning. It will give them more leeway to discuss issues without fear of punishment or sanctions.

“If we abridge them this right, it would be similar to imposing censorship of the media,” said acting BOR Chair Fermin Atalig.
So far, NMC students have not been subject to any form of censorship. (MM)
