PSS makes available technology funds
In efforts to keep up with global trends in advanced technology, the Public School System is striving to upgrade schools through technology literacy funds targeted to increase student achievement and performance.
This summer, PSS is still waiting to award up to 79 projects to qualified school applicants.
Project funds range from $5,000 to $15,000, according to Federal Programs Coordinator Bill Matson.
The federal assistance funds is prioritized for schools aiming to gear up for E-rate (education rate) or professional development related to education programs using the computers and the Internet.
Mr. Matson said the supplemental funds is also intended to acquire equipment that is not included in the E-rate discount package.
Funds may also be utilized to attend technology-oriented conferences, according to the Federal Programs office.
Since the range of funds to be awarded are at $5,000 to $15,000, schools may need to send more than one teacher to avail of the technology benefits.
“A school may need to split the conference/equipment costs into more than one application to keep the amount of funds requested below the maximum,” said Mr. Matson.
Instructional leaders at the school would also be eligible to attend the appropriate training and this would include school principals or instructional vice principals (not VPs assigned to only administrative duties).
The acquisition of computers and Internet connections will only be considered if needed as part of the non-discountable E-rate equipment required by the school (education-related and not for administrative use).
The funds being made available for school-based usage will be very flexible given the nature of the Technology regulations, according to Mr. Matson.
However, certain elements are essential if the application is to be accepted.
Mr. Matson added that the idea of the assistance program is to focus a total of $250,000 for technology literacy for PSS teachers and staff. (MM)
